Umbro is the original Manchester-based football brand that invented sportswear and sports tailoring.

Umbro’s first major football kit was made for Manchester City in 1934, a kit they won the FA Cup in.  Today, the company combines its heritage in sports tailoring with modern football culture to create groundbreaking and iconic football apparel, footwear and equipment that blend performance and style. Harold Humphreys was barely out of his teens when he started a sportswear company called Umbro from a tiny wash house on Green Lane in Wilmslow in 1924. The first deliveries were made with a handcart but within ten years, he was dressing Manchester City and Portsmouth for the 1934 FA Cup final at Wembley. If City took home the trophy, it was the smartness of the kits which caught everybody’s eye.

WEBSITE DESIGN
& DEVELOPMENT

One of the advantages of working with a company like UMBRO for over a decade is that you become familiar with the environment of the brand. You become aware of the evolution of their customers along with the evolution of the entire industry. For the website they wanted to display their products in a very clean e-commerce environment while using images of the teams and athletes that they sponsor throughout. The website also had to be translated into six languages for a global audience. My focus in direction of the website development was to utilize a mobile-first approach to the layout, concentrating on ease of navigation, membership signup, and shopping cart checkout. THIS IS OUR GAME
CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

The 2019 launch of the This Is Our Game campaign was to celebrate the culmination of UMBRO’s 95th anniversary.The campaign is a true expression of the brands passion for the beautiful game – from grass roots to the highest levels of the professional game, from players to fans, from the pitch to the stands – Umbro love and champion them all in the same way. Wherever there is Football there is Umbro. There are also some familiar faces featured in the film including Umbro brand ambassadors Pepe, Esteban Paredes, Paolo Guerrero, Edison Flores, Hudson Santos and clubs around the word such as West Ham United, Al Ahly SC, Gremio, Santos, Colo-Colo, Club Nacional de Football and more. I am excited to have directed the production of this video (watch below), as well as the entire campaign collateral production from stadium designs to print.

TWO SIDES ONE GOAL
CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

One of the unique features of the Umbro SX Boot is that the left and right football boot is a different color. The Umbro SX was marketed with the message “Two Sides, One Goal”. The right boot is colored red and silver, the left is black and silver. The Boot is a fusion of two of their most successful boots. The SX Boot incorporates the comfort and simplicity of the classic, Speciali with the flare and technology of the Evolution X. This was the first time that a (proper) football company attempted to promote boots that were sold with two different colors in the box, which I immediately recognized as a challenge, but I do believe the campaign I designed is worth a look.

The design for the UMBRO team wear catalogs have been primarily lead by the content aesthetic of the website. VIDEO PRODUCTION

I consider myself fortunate to have worked on the two umbro videos listed. The first video was for a UK based clothing company known as Pretty Green, that is owned by former Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher along with his business partner Nigel Grant.  The company was founded in 2006, and in 2012 they approached umbro to create a range of clothing exclusively for the Pretty Green brand.  To launch the collaboration, WidgetWorkz was approached to shoot a video that would be used on the Pretty Green website as well as throughout the internet.

The second video was to announce the umbro kit sponsorship of FC Schalke, one of the most successful professional football clubs in the German Bundesliga. The team is the second-largest sports club in Germany, with fans throughout the world.  The focus of this video was centered on the passion of the FC Schalke fans and what they add to each and every match.
